Across the peat bogs of Polesie National Park

The Spławy trail starts in Stare Załucze, right by the education and museum centre of Polesie National Park, in the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District in the Lublin province. The route is about 7.5 kilometres long and takes two to three hours. Nearly 4.5 kilometres run along wooden boardwalks spanning the boggy ground, which is the only safe way to cross it.

Landscape and wildlife

The trail crosses meadows, low and transitional peat bogs, horsetail stands, birch woods and swamp forests – a combination of habitats rare in Central Europe. Attentive visitors may spot elk, marsh harrier, coot or the European pond turtle, for which Polesie is one of the last Polish strongholds. The route reaches Lake Łukie, viewed from a wooden pier.

Access is via national road 82 towards Stare Załucze, and you can also approach from Lake Piaseczno. The car park is at the museum centre, where it is worth starting with the exhibition on the nature of Polesie. A shelter along the trail provides shade and cover from rain.
