Stara Orunia is an underground waterworks reservoir in the southern part of Gdańsk, one of three sites on the Gdańsk Waterworks Trail alongside the Stary Sobieski and Kazimierz reservoirs. It was built to supply the city with drinking water, but today it serves an entirely different purpose.
The interior has become the largest bat hibernation site in Pomerania. The animals are favoured by the humid air, maintained by a layer of clean water a few centimetres deep left on the floor of the chambers. Metal walkways have been laid above it for visitors, and the site opens only once the hibernation period is over.
A visit takes about forty minutes. The temperature inside stays around ten degrees regardless of the season, so bring warm clothing. The approach runs from Nowiny Street and is marked with Waterworks Trail signs.
