The Rzeczka complex is one of seven underground sites of the German „Riese” („Giant”) project, tunnelled into the Owl Mountains in the final years of the Second World War. The adits lie in the village of Rzeczka in the Walim commune, by the road running along the valley floor. The works were never completed and the true purpose of the project has still not been established beyond doubt.
The tunnels were driven by prisoners of concentration camps, many of whom died of exhaustion. In Rzeczka this side of the story carries as much weight as the engineering — a monument to the victims of Nazism stands by the entrance. Researchers' hypotheses about the purpose of the complex range from an underground factory to a command centre.
The accessible section was turned into the Museum of the Walim Adits in 2001; part of the corridors remains closed because of the risk of collapse. The route is walked with a guide and a helmet, at a constantly low temperature — a jacket and sturdy shoes are advisable. Nearby you can also visit the Osówka and Włodarz complexes.
