Zbiornik Wody Stary Sobieski is a historic hydro-engineering structure hidden inside Góra Szubieniczna hill in the Wrzeszcz district, between Traugutta and Sobieskiego streets, right behind the grounds of the Gdańsk University of Technology. It belongs to the Gdańsk Waterworks Trail, a set of sites telling the story of the city's water supply from the Teutonic era, through wooden pipelines, to the modern network. It held 5,000 m³ of water and remains the largest reservoir of its kind in Gdańsk.
The interior was built on a circular plan, and the layout of its chambers forms a surprising maze of brick corridors and vaults. The greatest curiosity is the whispering grotto: the acoustics allow a conversation across some 200 metres. The construction and the way sound travels resemble an amphitheatre, which makes the site unique in the country. A damp microclimate prevails here, with a temperature of about 10°C.
Tours are led by a guide and take roughly an hour; the site works regardless of the weather and is also suitable for children. A viewpoint with a panorama of Gdańsk has been arranged next to the reservoir. The hill lies in a quiet part of Wrzeszcz, close to the university campus and walking valleys, so a visit is easy to combine with a longer stroll around the district.
