Kopalnia Guido stands on 3 Maja Street in Zabrze and today forms part of the Coal Mining Museum. It owes its name to its founder, the industrialist Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. Coal is no longer extracted here: the works were turned into an underground tourist route, one of the most interesting post-industrial attractions of Upper Silesia.
The descent is made by a mining cage lift down to levels of 170, 320 and 355 metres. Along the route await a winding engine from 1927, the former stables for pit ponies, the chapel of St Barbara, heavy cutting machines and a suspended electric railway, while the deepest level also holds an underground pub with a space for events.
The complex offers several variants of the visit: Mroki Kopalni, Strefa K8 and Górnicza Szychta. The last one is a treat for those who want to feel like a real miner: participants put on a full outfit with mining equipment and carry out simple extraction tasks. Underground the temperature stays constantly low, so warm clothing is useful at any time of year. The site works regardless of the weather.
