An underground city in the Owl Mountains

Osówka is the largest accessible site of the German „Riese” project, tunnelled at the end of the Second World War. The complex lies in Sierpnica, north-west of Jedlina-Zdrój, within the Owl Mountains Landscape Park. Underground it hides a system of concrete corridors, halls and fortifications whose purpose was never officially disclosed.

The riddle of its purpose

Construction was carried out in strict secrecy and was never finished. Researchers' hypotheses centre on an underground armaments factory and on a command headquarters for the highest Reich authorities, but none has been confirmed by documents. On the surface concrete structures survive, among them the objects known as the Casino and the Power Plant, which raise just as many questions.

Routes and surroundings

Several visiting options are available: the historical route, the extreme route, the Riese Expedition and an above-ground educational trail. The guide's account is supported by multimedia — films, holograms and spatial projections. After the tour many visitors set off along the trails of the Owl Mountains, which begin nearby.
