The Underground Tourist Route in Kłodzko leads through a system of passages and cellars hidden beneath the historic centre of the town. Their beginnings go back to the 13th century, when burghers enlarged the cellars of their houses to store goods, food and the famous Kłodzko beer. The low, steady temperature preserved products perfectly, and keeping valuables underground protected them from the fires that ravaged the medieval town.
The expansion of the cellars was linked to the town's position on the route connecting Silesia with Bohemia, one of the branches of the Amber Road. The town served as an important point of exchange, and the capacious warehouses allowed merchants to amass large quantities of goods. It was trade that shaped the layout and scale of the Kłodzko underground.
About 700 metres of corridors are open to visitors. The route begins near Zawiszy Street and runs beneath Kościelna, Armii Krajowej, Tumska and Czeska streets, ending just below Kłodzko Fortress, the natural next stop of a visit. The walk is varied by multimedia effects and displays showing the everyday life of the town's former inhabitants. It is cool underground all year round.
