Szlak Jaskini Ciemnej, Wieś Ojców
Jaskinia Ciemna lies in Ojców National Park, in a slope of the Prądnik Valley near Ojców, in the Lesser Poland region. The entrance is about 65 metres above the valley floor and is reached by a steep path among limestone rocks. The main chamber, 88 metres long, 23 metres wide and over 10 metres high, is regarded as the largest in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Its far end narrows and turns into a tunnel.
This is one of the most important Stone Age sites in Poland. Evidence of human presence in the Lower Palaeolithic was found here, which makes the cave a key point in research on the earliest settlement in Polish lands. It is worth looking closely at the stalagmites, the tubular stalactites and the potholes reaching four metres in diameter. The cave is also a habitat for several taxa of bats, numerous invertebrates and more than a dozen taxa of arachnids. The temperature stays at 7–8°C, so warm clothing is essential whatever the season.
