Krzemionki Opatowskie is a complex of prehistoric striped flint mines north-east of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. The mining field holds thousands of shafts connected by galleries and ranks among the best preserved sites of its kind in Europe.
The underground route is about 465 metres long and leads through pit, niche and chamber workings. Drawings made with charcoal have survived on the walls. On the surface there is an archaeological museum and an open-air park with a reconstructed Neolithic settlement.
The site works well for visits with children, as part of the display is hands-on and shows early crafts. The mining area is protected as a nature reserve within the Kamienna Valley Protected Landscape Area, so the walk combines archaeology with nature.
