Merchants' cellars beneath the market square

The Underground Tourist Route in Opatów leads through a network of cellars and corridors dug in loess beneath the market square and the townhouses of the old town. Opatów is one of the oldest settlements of the Sandomierz region and lay on busy trade routes — the underground owes its existence to merchants.

What you will see

The route is about 500 metres long and spreads over three levels; the lowest reaches almost 14 metres below the market square. Along the way you pass former goods stores, narrow passages and rooms with exhibitions devoted to the history of the town and the region.

Good to know

Visits are guided and last about an hour. The temperature underground stays at around ten degrees all year, so in summer it is worth taking a sweatshirt or a jacket. The floor is uneven in places, comfortable shoes are useful.
