ul. Campi 15, Bochnia
The Bochnia Salt Mine lies in Lesser Poland, east of Cracow. Mining began here in the middle of the 13th century and continued without a break until the end of the 20th century, which makes it one of the oldest industrial plants in Europe. The historic workings are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The underground is open to visitors in several variants — the historical route presents the story of salt mining, the natural one focuses on geology and the microclimate. Below ground there are exhibition chambers, a chapel, a boat crossing and an underground train.
The mine also offers an overnight stay in the Ważyn chamber, used for its therapeutic microclimate. Visits are guided and the temperature underground is low whatever the season. Table salt is no longer extracted here.
