Szklary-Huta 24, Ząbkowice Śląskie
The Szklary Mine lies in Szklary-Huta near Ząbkowice Śląskie in Lower Silesia. Nickel ore was extracted here, along with ornamental stones prized in jewellery: chrysoprase, opal and carnelian. The works operated from the end of the 19th century until the 1990s.
The accessible part is the Underground Educational Route, walked with a guide only. The tour covers extraction techniques, how to recognise semi-precious stones and the history of the works; a shelter is also part of the route. Admission includes a helmet with a lamp, as no electrical lighting was installed in the workings.
Because of its geological value the site is protected as a documentation site, and the local chrysoprase deposits are among the richest in the world. Underground the temperature stays around 8 degrees all year, so warm clothing and closed shoes are essential. A visit takes roughly an hour.
