ul. Podgórze 55, Kowary
The Liczyrzepa Uranium Mine lies in Kowary at the foot of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains), on Podgórze Street. Tunnels were driven here for centuries — first for iron, silver and lead ores, and later, in the mid-20th century, for uranium. Today part of the workings is open to visitors as a guided educational route.
The route covers about 1.2 km of corridors. A guide leads you through galleries and chambers, showing how mining technology changed: from breaking rock by hand to drilling and explosives. A separate theme is the post-war search for uranium, carried out in strict secrecy, together with the everyday life of the miners working underground.
The underground temperature stays at around 8°C, so a warm jacket and sturdy shoes are worth taking even in summer. Visits are possible only with a guide at set times, so booking a slot in advance makes planning the day easier. The site works well in bad weather and is interesting for children.
