ul. Obozowa 4, Nowa Ruda
The Old Mine in Nowa Ruda is a museum housed in the buildings of a colliery at the foot of the Owl Mountains, in the Kłodzko district. Hard coal was mined here and later also fire-resistant shale; the works closed in the 1990s and the site was turned over to visitors.
The route splits into a surface and an underground part. The buildings hold machinery, tools and memorabilia showing the work and daily life of miners; one of the highlights is the preserved control room. In the adit you can see the shaft tower, ventilation fans and cutting equipment that visitors are allowed to touch.
The museum works well as a trip with children — the underground walk is enlivened by the Skarbnik, the ghost of the mine. The first records of coal mining in the area go back to the 15th century, making Nowa Ruda one of the oldest mining centres in Poland. It is cool underground, so bring a jacket.
