Underground in Tomaszów Mazowiecki

The Nagórzyce Grottoes are an underground tourist route in the Nagórzyce district of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, in the Łódź province. They occupy former workings left by hand extraction of quartz sand, cut into rocks laid down in a sea some hundred million years ago.

What to see

About 160 metres of chambers and corridors with rippled, colourful walls are open to visitors. In several places the working conditions of the old sand diggers have been recreated, and guides explain the geology of the region and the history of the workings. The site in its present form has operated since 2012.

Good to know

The grottoes are especially busy in summer, as the underground temperature stays around 10 degrees — a sweatshirt is useful whatever the weather outside. Bats hibernate in the passages, and a local legend tells of a man in a checked outfit who leads visitors astray.
