A railway shelter beneath Strzyżów

The shelter tunnel under Żarnowska Hill is an underground railway structure in the eastern part of Strzyżów in the Subcarpathian region. It was built during the Second World War as part of the extensive Anlage Süd complex and is the only underground shelter in Poland designed for a train. It served as a garage and a storage space.

The scale of the structure

The tunnel is 438 metres long and almost 9 metres high, which allowed an entire staff train to be hidden inside. The complex also included passive shelters for technical facilities, an installation tunnel, a railway siding, a wooden platform and an embankment. Not everything has survived, but the remaining parts still impress with the sheer scale of the construction.

Visiting

The site is cared for by the museum in Strzyżów, which runs a tourist route here. It is cool and damp underground whatever the season, so warmer clothing is useful. The visit is short, so it is easy to combine with a walk around Strzyżów itself and the Wisłok valley.

  • Car park near the entrance
  • Museum ticket office
  • Guided tours
  • Route accessible for pushchairs
Visit duration: approx. 30 min Seasonality: All year round; cool and damp inside the tunnel throughout the year
