Podskalany, Wieś Tomaszowice
Badger Cave hides in the Podskalański Gorge near Tomaszowice, in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland not far from Kraków. It is only 37 metres long, yet it shows well the character of the Jurassic landscape of limestone crags, gorges and underground voids.
The cave consists of two chambers. It developed in Late Jurassic limestone: the section from the fork to the exit opening was shaped by karst processes, while the remaining parts formed along rock fissures. A tiny lake has survived in one of the chambers, and a spring flows out of the cave — evidence of groundwater circulation in the area.
The walls of the cave are blackened: in 1997 car tyres were burnt here to drive animals away, which destroyed the flowstone and other formations typical of such sites. Foxes and badgers still find shelter here, and the cave owes its name to the latter. The entrance can be slippery with water, so shoes with good grip and a torch are useful.
