The Museum of Fortifications and Bats in Pniewo near Międzyrzecz opens up part of the Międzyrzecz Fortified Region — one of the largest defensive systems in Europe. Beneath the forests of the Lubusz region run dozens of kilometres of tunnels linking armoured combat bunkers, barracks and underground narrow-gauge railway stations. The entrance lies within the Scharnhorst fortified group.
The underground complex is divided into several options: a short route for families, a long one for the more persistent, a surface walk among the combat bunkers, and an extreme route requiring your own lighting, work clothing and good fitness. The temperature in the tunnels stays a few degrees above zero all year, so a warm jacket is useful even in summer.
The MRU corridors form the largest bat hibernation site in Poland, protected as a nature reserve. More than a dozen species winter here, including myotis and barbastelle bats, so some routes may be restricted in that season. The surrounding area invites walks and cycling along forest tracks dotted with concrete shelters.
