Chęciny
Hell Cave lies near Chęciny in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, among the limestone hills typical of this part of the region. Its name comes from old beliefs: in the 18th century local people explained the origin of the grotto as the work of evil forces and thought that devils lived inside.
In reality the cave is the result of karst processes. Acidified water dissolved the limestone, first carving out small fissures and then tearing off rock fragments and carrying them outside. The result is a system of corridors about 57 metres long in total.
The interior is relatively bright — daylight enters through a rock window and two chimneys, so a torch is not necessary during the day. Care is needed nonetheless: inside there is a three-metre shaft sunk during the search for lead ores, and nearby you can see funnel-shaped hollows left by unsecured mining shafts.
