The largest body of water in the Kielce region

Lake Chańcza is an artificial reservoir on the Czarna Staszowska river, located in the south-eastern part of the Świętokrzyskie Province near the village of the same name. It was created by damming the river and today it is the largest body of water in the region — its surface reaches about 340 hectares and it holds around 40 million cubic metres of water.

The depth varies: near the dam it is more than ten metres, while in the northern part it drops to about three, where the water warms up faster.

Water recreation

Chańcza is one of the main waterside leisure spots in the region. In summer there are supervised bathing areas, water equipment rentals and slipways for boats. The reservoir has a reputation as a good place for sailing and windsurfing, helped by the open space and the wind blowing across the surface. Quieter options include pedalo, canoe or boat trips along the wooded shores.

Angling and nature

The reservoir is well known among anglers — the fishing grounds are extensive and the shoreline offers plenty of quiet spots away from the beaches. The banks are mostly covered with pine forest, so even at the height of the season you can find a peaceful stretch of shore. It is also a good place for watching water birds.

The surroundings

Chańcza lies between the regional roads 756 and 764, so it is easy to reach by car, and the area works well as a base for exploring the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Staszów and the Czarna Staszowska valley. Campsites and holiday centres operate next to the reservoir; using them involves a fee.
