A lake in the middle of Olsztyn

Jezioro Długie lies in the western part of Olsztyn, right next to the Municipal Forest, yet it keeps a distinctly urban character. Its name comes from its shape: the trough-like basin stretches for about 1.6 km and covers some 27 ha. The surroundings are surprisingly varied — forest comes down from the north, the Mszar peat bog reserve lies to the north-east, and housing estates border the southern shore.

Walking, cycling and water

A loop of about 5.5 km runs around the lake, used by walkers, cyclists and roller skaters. Deckchairs, jetties and fishing seats stand along the route, with outdoor fitness equipment at several points. The shores are linked by the Lovers' Bridge. After years of restoration work the water quality has improved enough that swimmers and divers practising their skills are returning.

Who it suits

It makes a good break from sightseeing in Olsztyn: an hour is enough to walk most of the shoreline, and the flat, surfaced path works well with a pushchair or a dog. The Mszar reserve offers a taste of Warmian nature without leaving the city, and the old town is a few kilometres away.
