Hel lies at the very end of the Hel Peninsula, bordered on one side by the open Baltic Sea and on the other by the Gulf of Gdańsk. The town has two beaches: the Small Beach on the bay side, with shallower and calmer water, and the Large Beach facing the sea, wide and exposed to waves. Both are a short walk from the centre.
The beaches are linked by a belt of pine forest, and the town attractions are close by: the promenade, the seal sanctuary, the lighthouse, the harbour and the remains of fortifications and bunkers from the Second World War. Restaurants, bars and guest rooms line the streets leading to the water.
The coastal dunes are protected within the Helskie Wydmy reserve, home to rare plants, lichens and fungi – use only the marked paths down to the sand. The beach in Hel is listed among the safest in Europe, including in the European Best Destinations ranking.
