Zalew Zakrzówek came into being in 1990, when water filled a disused limestone quarry pit in the Dębniki district of Cracow. The reservoir is surrounded by steep white rock walls, and the water has an intensely turquoise colour that has earned the place the nickname of Cracow's French Riviera.
Swimming outside designated spots is forbidden, because the banks drop almost vertically and the water cools rapidly with depth. The reservoir has, however, been opened to divers. Objects for exploration were sunk on the bottom: a car, a bus, a van and boats, together with a granite plaque commemorating Karol Wojtyła's work in this very quarry.
Zakrzówek forms part of the green wedge reaching towards Bielany and Tyniec, which is why residents of Cracow come here readily, spreading blankets on the grassy clearings, walking and cycling. Access leads along Wyłom and Salezjańska streets.
