Wieś Kusięta
The karst lake in Kusięta lies in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, north-west of Olsztyn in the Silesian Voivodeship. It is a small, oval body of water hidden among fields and clumps of trees, a dozen or so kilometres from Częstochowa. Despite its modest size it counts among the more interesting geological features of the region.
The lake fills a karst sinkhole formed in the limestone bedrock and sealed by a layer of impermeable glacial clays and sands several metres thick. Lakes of such origin are rare in Poland. About 300 metres to the north lies another karst form — an uvala, a broad depression created where several neighbouring sinkholes merged.
A picnic spot has been arranged on the shore, but the lake is not suited to swimming — it lacks beaches and any facilities that would make bathing safe. A visit is best combined with a walk among the nearby limestone outcrops and upland trails.
