Szabelnia, Mysłowice
The Hubertus bathing area lies on the boundary of Katowice, Mysłowice and Sosnowiec, in the Szabelnia area. The lake is not natural — it was formed when disused pits left after sand extraction filled with water, a typical feature of the Upper Silesian landscape, where industry has shaped even the landforms.
Today it is one of the more popular weekend leisure spots in the conurbation: close to the city, yet with a sandy shore and greenery all around.
In season a supervised bathing area with a beach is open, with sanitary facilities and food outlets. Walking paths run around the lake, and a wakeboard lift operates on the water, drawing water sports enthusiasts and spectators watching the jumps from the shore.
Hubertus has a reputation as a lively, sociable place. Part of the beach has been arranged in holiday style — with straw parasols and a bar — and open-air parties are held there at weekends. Anyone looking for quiet should choose a weekday or an early morning; the lakeside is far calmer then, and a walk around the lake offers a moment with nature right next to a big city.
It is a good destination for a few hours for families with children and for anyone who wants to combine sightseeing in Upper Silesia with a rest by the water. The terrain is mostly flat and easily accessible. A visit to Hubertus can easily be combined with Mysłowice, Katowice or Sosnowiec — all within a quarter of an hour of driving.
