Lake Ełckie lies in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in the Ełk Lakeland, and reaches the very centre of Ełk. The Ełk river flows through it. The lake is one of the larger and deeper ones in this part of Masuria, and a broad peninsula divides it into two parts. On the eastern side the banks are taken up by city buildings, while to the west the lake connects with Lake Sunowo.
A promenade with cafes, restaurants and pubs runs along the water and is the most popular place for a stroll in town. There is a municipal beach, a summer stage, a campsite and a hire point for water equipment for anyone keen on a canoe or a pedalo. The banks are low and treeless, so reaching the water is easy.
A historic bridge spans the lake and leads to the island with the ruins of the Teutonic castle, one of the most interesting remains of old Ełk. A stay by the water is easily combined with a walk through the older part of town and a ride on the Ełk narrow-gauge railway.
