A small lake in the centre of Mrągowo

Magistrackie Lake is a small body of water set right in the middle of Mrągowo and surrounded by the town's buildings. A promenade runs around its shores, so a walk along the whole circuit takes little more than a quarter of an hour and combines easily with a stroll through the centre or a visit to the nearby market.

History

In the Middle Ages the town relied on water for its defence: two lakes protected it from the north — Magistrackie, then divided into two parts, and Czos — while a moat closed off the remaining sides. Only the smaller of the two has survived, and a market square now occupies the site of the larger one.

What to see

Swimming is not possible here, but the setting itself has been carefully arranged. An islet with a shelter for swans sits in the middle of the water, several fountains are in operation, and in the evening lamps hidden even in the grass light the lake up. Sculptures made by students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw stand along the promenade.
