Wieś Susiec
Szumy na Tanwi, also known as szypoty, are a series of small rocky steps on the Tanew river near Susiec in the Tomaszów district. Here the river cuts across the tectonic edge of Roztocze, and the water spills over successive thresholds with the characteristic murmur that gave the place its name.
The area belongs to the Solska Forest Landscape Park. In a public poll for the seven wonders of Polish nature the cascades were among the winners and they remain one of the emblems of Roztocze.
A trail with wooden platforms and footbridges runs along the river, so you can come close to the water without damaging the banks. A walk along the cascades usually takes about two hours; the route is easy, though rooty and damp in places — shoes with a good sole work better than flip-flops. The cascades look impressive in every season: in spring with high water, in summer surrounded by greenery, in autumn in a colourful forest, in winter covered with frost and ice.
Susiec is one of the busier tourist bases in Roztocze. Many walking trails meet here, the Central Roztocze Cycling Route passes through, and a canoeing stretch has been marked out on the river between Narol and Rebizanty. In season the village is full of visitors and offers a wide choice of accommodation and places to eat.
The cascades lie in a protected area — you must keep to the marked routes and platforms, campfires are forbidden and litter must be taken away. At the height of the season, especially at weekends, it can get crowded; the quietest time is early morning. There is no organised bathing in the river and the bottom can be stony.
