ul. Plażowa, Wieś Pławniowice
Lake Pławniowice lies in the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Gliwice district, within the municipality of Rudziniec, between the villages of Pławniowice and Niewiesze. The lake is not of natural origin — it filled a pit left after the extraction of backfill sand once used in the region's mines. Today almost nothing recalls that industrial past: the shores are gentle and sandy, and the water is supplied by the Toszecki Stream.
The reservoir is regarded as one of the most popular bathing spots of the Upper Silesian conurbation. It can be reached from Gliwice or Zabrze in a quarter of an hour, yet despite the proximity of large cities the surroundings have kept their quiet, rural character.
On the Niewiesze side there is a supervised beach with extensive recreational facilities. In season water equipment rentals operate and sailing boats and boards glide across the lake — sailing schools are run here. Food outlets are spread along the shore, together with places to stay: campsites, guesthouses and private rooms.
The lake also has a second, quieter face. Parts of the shoreline remain wild, overgrown with reeds and shrubs. These are favourite haunts of anglers and birdwatchers, especially outside the peak season.
In Pławniowice itself it is worth visiting the imposing palace and park complex surrounded by old-growth trees, one of the more interesting residences in this part of Silesia. Remains of former fortified buildings have also survived nearby. Marked hiking trails and cycling routes run through the area, so relaxing by the water is easy to combine with a short sightseeing trip.
This is a place for families with children, water sports enthusiasts and anyone looking for a break by the water without travelling far. The area is freely accessible and dogs are welcome. Bear in mind that on hot weekends the beach can get very crowded — it is quietest early in the morning and outside the holiday season.
