A reservoir near Alwernia

Zalew Skowronek is a small reservoir in Alwernia, Chrzanów county, some 30 km west of Kraków. It was created beside a holiday resort of the same name, on the edge of the town, in the gently rolling landscape of western Lesser Poland. Local roads lead there from the centre of Alwernia.

A former resort today

It was once a popular weekend destination for people from the Silesian and Kraków conurbations. Today the recreational facilities are largely run down and the reservoir functions without a beach or lifeguard service. Revitalisation plans are talked about, but for now the place keeps its raw, slightly forgotten character.

Who it suits

The reservoir remains a favourite fishing spot for locals, who account for most of the traffic here. Come for the quiet, a walk around the water and the view rather than for beach attractions. Alwernia itself is known for the Bernardine monastery complex on the hill, which pairs well with a trip to the lake.
