A lake in a former chalk pit

Jezioro Szmaragdowe lies in the Zdroje district of Szczecin, within the Puszcza Bukowa Landscape Park. The reservoir filled the pit of a former chalk mine, and its intense green colour comes from calcium carbonate dissolved in the water. Steep, wooded banks give it an almost mountain character.

What to see

Walking loops of varying length run around the lake and are easy to match to your fitness. The paths climb onto the rim of the old pit, where the water is seen from above. Traces of the former mine and structures from the war years survive in the forest. Swimming is forbidden — the banks drop steeply and the water is deep.

The surroundings

The lake is a natural gateway to Puszcza Bukowa, with a network of marked hiking and cycling trails, nature reserves and the heights of Wzgórza Bukowe. It is a popular weekend destination for the people of Szczecin, a quarter of an hour from the city centre.
