A lake in a former chalk pit

Jezioro Turkusowe lies on the island of Wolin, south of the village of Wapnica and about five kilometres from Międzyzdroje. The lake filled an abandoned chalk quarry after mining ended. Its name comes from the colour of the water: the white calcium carbonate bed scatters sunlight, giving the surface an intense turquoise shade.

Piaskowa Góra viewpoint

The colour shows best from above, so it is worth climbing the high southern bank, where the Piaskowa Góra viewpoint has been set up. Forest paths lead there and the final stretch is a short ascent. The banks are steep and wooded, hence hard to reach — swimming in the lake is prohibited.

Reserve and access

The lake is surrounded by a strict nature reserve named after Professor Władysław Szafer and Doctor Bogdan Dyakowski, with many monumental trees nearby. A blue trail running along the Baltic and the Szczecin Lagoon leads down to the water. Wapnica can also be reached by bus from Międzyzdroje.
