A lake beneath a prehistoric stronghold

Lake Biskupin lies in the Żnin commune, Żnin county, in the Pałuki region, and connects with the neighbouring Lake Skrzynka. On its shore stands the Archaeological Museum in Biskupin — a reserve with a reconstruction of a Lusatian culture settlement whose discovery ranks among the loudest in European archaeology. Water and stronghold form a single whole here: it was the surrounding lake that protected the settlement and preserved its timber structures.

What to see

The main attraction is the archaeological reserve with its defensive rampart, breakwater and rows of huts. The museum runs cruises on the lake aboard the pleasure boat Diabeł Wenecki, so the stronghold can also be viewed from the water. No beaches or bathing areas have been marked out — the lake plays a scenic role rather than a recreational one.

The surroundings

Biskupin lies on the Piast Route, and the narrow-gauge Żnin steam railway runs here from Żnin and Wenecja, an attraction in itself. It is worth combining the visit with the castle ruins in Wenecja and its narrow-gauge railway museum.
