A protected lake near Trzciel

The Jezioro Wielkie nature reserve lies in the Trzciel commune, Międzyrzecz County, in the Lubusz region. It covers a shallow lake surrounded by forest together with adjoining land that has retained its natural character. The whole area is under active protection because of its natural, scientific and scenic value.

Birds and islands

The lake is a refuge for around 140 bird species. Great crested grebes, coots, great reed warblers, gadwalls and goldeneyes nest or stop over here, while grey herons and great cormorants form colonies. There are three islands on the water — the largest is famous for its oak stand over two hundred years old, the two smaller ones are covered with spruce and alder.

Visiting

The reserve is viewed from the shore while walking the forest paths; allow about three hours for an unhurried circuit of the area. The islands remain closed to visitors. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons for birdwatching.
