The Zegrze Reservoir is an artificial lake created in 1963 by damming the Narew in the Warsaw Basin. It was built as the lowest element of a planned cascade of reservoirs and was meant to improve navigation. Today it serves mainly recreation and acts as a water reserve for the Warsaw conurbation, while the dam plays only a minor role in power generation.
The broad sheet of water is one of the main sailing grounds of central Poland. Marinas, watersports centres and holiday resorts have grown along the shores, especially on the Nieporęt, Zegrze and Serock sides — most of them built in the 1970s.
The reservoir is a popular fishery: bream, tench, roach, zander, pike and catfish are all caught here. Being close to the capital, it gets crowded at weekends, and quiet has to be sought in the side bays and near the backwater.
