Balaton is a leisure and recreation centre in Sosnowiec, in the Porąbka district, in the Silesian Voivodeship. It lies about ten kilometres from the city centre and a similar distance from Dąbrowa Górnicza, so residents of the whole Dąbrowa Basin can reach it easily.
The centre is surrounded by forests, and its heart is Lake Balaton, covering some ten hectares. The name, borrowed from the famous Hungarian lake, has taken firm root and today works as a local brand.
The greatest charm of the lake is a small island, clearly visible from the shore. The shoreline is varied: in one place a sandy beach has been laid out, while the remaining stretches are overgrown with rushes that provide natural shelter for waterfowl.
A playground next to the beach is an attraction for the youngest visitors. Walking paths run around the lake and are readily used by runners and cyclists, also outside the summer season.
This is a classic weekend spot for families with children and for residents of the surrounding towns. It works well as a short stop while travelling through the conurbation — greenery, water and quiet right next to a densely built up region.
The area is freely accessible and free of charge, dogs are allowed, and the paths are mostly level and comfortable. In summer the beach can get crowded, so it is worth arriving early. Before swimming, check the rules currently in force at the lake.
