Karpacz
Mały Staw is a glacial lake in the Karkonosze Mountains, inside the Karkonosze National Park, south-west of Karpacz. It fills the floor of a cirque enclosed by steep, rocky slopes, and the Łomnica river flows out of it. The water is exceptionally clear, which together with the mountain setting creates one of the most recognisable views in the Polish mountains.
Several marked trails lead to the lake. From Karpacz Górny the simplest is the blue trail, about 5 kilometres and roughly two hours of walking, while the red trail, part of the Main Sudetes Trail, is an alternative. The paths are stony and call for sturdy footwear, and inside the national park walking is allowed only on marked trails.
Right by the water stands Samotnia, one of the most photographed mountain huts in the Sudetes. The cirque and its streams are home to the Alpine newt and the brown trout, among others. In winter conditions here are truly alpine and some trails may be closed.
