The upper reservoir of the Żarnowiec power plant

Zbiornik Czymanowo is an artificial body of water on the plateau in the Gniewino commune, Wejherowo county. It was built as the upper reservoir of the „Żarnowiec” pumped-storage power plant: it is about 1.2 km long, 1 km wide and covers 122 hectares. Water is released from it into Lake Żarnowieckie at peak hours and pumped back up at night.

The village that gave way to the water

The village of Kolkowo was sacrificed for the construction of the reservoir and dissolved in 1974. A historic manor house, workers' cottages from 1830 and 1842 and an Evangelical cemetery were demolished at the time. Earlier a women's branch of the Stutthof camp also operated in this area – today no trace of the former buildings remains in the landscape.

How to see it

Because of its technical function the reservoir is closed to tourists and walkers, and swimming is forbidden. The best view of the reservoir and the whole area is from the nearby Kaszubskie Oko observation tower in Gniewino.
