Smreczyński Staw lies in the Tomanowa Valley, a side branch of the Kościeliska Valley, within Tatra National Park. It is a small moraine lake surrounded by dense spruce forest and covered by strict protection. What sets it apart from typical Tatra tarns is its setting – it rests not at the bottom of a glacial cirque, but on a wooded plain in the shade of the trees.
The surface of the lake mirrors the surrounding summits: Smreczyński Wierch, Kamienista and Błyszcz, along with the slopes of Starorobociański Wierch. The water is unusually rich in life for a mountain lake – amphibians are particularly abundant here. Nearby lie the Wyżnia and Niżnia Smreczyńska clearings.
The approach follows a black-marked trail branching off the Kościeliska Valley near the Hala Ornak mountain hut; the climb takes about half an hour. It is worth setting aside a full day for the valley walk – the quiet by the lake is its greatest asset.
