Jeżyce, Poznań
The Strzeszyńskie Ponds, also known as Strzeszynek, are a group of small water bodies in the north-western part of Poznań, in the Jeżyce area. They formed in former clay and peat pits that gradually filled with water. The ponds are linked by the Bogdanka river, and the much larger Strzeszyńskie Lake lies right next door.
The shores are covered with rich reed and marsh vegetation: common reed, broadleaf and narrowleaf cattail, yellow water lily, marsh marigold and sedges. Ferns grow in the damper spots, including marsh fern and broad buckler fern. It is a good place for a short session of birdwatching and observing aquatic plants without leaving the city.
Swimming in the ponds is not recommended, as these are natural reservoirs on the site of former pits. The strengths of the place are its walking routes and the cycle path running through, the oldest in Poznań. A loop around the ponds takes little time and is easy to combine with a visit to neighbouring Strzeszyńskie Lake.
