One of the deepest lakes in Poland

Lake Szurpiły lies in the Suwałki Landscape Park, by the village of Szurpiły in the Jeleniewo municipality. It covers about 82 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 47 metres, which places it among the deepest Polish lakes, just after Hańcza. Its ribbon shape and steep slopes are the work of the ice sheet.

Landscape and surroundings

In the middle of the lake lies the densely wooded island of Pustelnia. The setting is formed by distinctive hills, Góra Kościelna and Góra Cmentarna, offering broad views over the water and the rolling Suwałki region. The surrounding hills hide traces of early Yotvingian settlement, and the climbs can be steep.

Good to know

The lake is covered by a quiet zone, swimming is prohibited and there are no supervised bathing areas. Only a few informal paths lead down to the shore, and the sloping banks make access to the water difficult. Angling is the main activity here: pike, perch, bream, vendace, whitefish, tench and eel are caught.
