The gem of Suwałki Landscape Park

Lake Jaczno lies in the Wiżajny municipality near the village of Smolniki, within Suwałki Landscape Park. Steep post-glacial hills surround it, and its highly developed shoreline forms bays, peninsulas and narrows. The water has a distinctive greenish tint, rare among the lakes of the Suwałki region.

What to see

A trail of about seven kilometres circles the lake, starting and ending in Smolniki; it runs along hill ridges that open onto further viewpoints in the park. Reeds, bulrush, cattail, sweet flag and yellow water lily grow along the banks, while so-called hanging peat bogs survive on the slopes. The ash tree with the largest girth in the region also stands here.

The surroundings

Jaczno is linked by the Jacznianka river to Lake Kameduł, and Smolniki is famous for panoramas counted among the finest in Poland. The terrain is demanding on foot because of the elevation changes, but rewards walkers with sweeping moraine landscapes.
