Forest reservoir in the Knyszyn Forest

The Wyżary reservoir lies near the settlement of Wyżary in the Gródek commune, in the heart of the Knyszyn Forest (Puszcza Knyszyńska) in Podlasie. It is an artificial retention basin created in 1970 by damming the waters of the Radulinka river. It serves as a fire-fighting water source for the surrounding stands, supports the protection of local natural assets and is used for recreation.

What to see

A small jetty, benches and a picnic shelter have been arranged by the water — a natural resting point on a walking, cycling or horse-riding route. An educational trail runs nearby, along with the January Uprising Trail. Deeper into the forest waits an unusual open-air exhibition, „Drugie życie drzew” (The Second Life of Trees), showing the role of deadwood in the forest ecosystem.

Good to know

Swimming in the reservoir is not permitted. There is no car access to the shore itself — drivers need to plan a parking spot in advance and walk in along a forest road. The silence of the primeval forest reigns around, so bring binoculars: rich birdlife and animal tracks are an everyday sight here.
