ul. Potockiego 4, Żnin
Ciuchcia Żnińska, also known as the Żnin Narrow-Gauge Railway, is one of the most recognisable attractions of the Piast Route. The line was built in 1894 and for most of its existence served as an ordinary means of transport, carrying residents and goods between the towns of the Pałuki region. Today it carries tourists only and has become a destination in its own right.
The departure station lies in Żnin on Potockiego Street, right next to the course of the red-marked Piast Route.
The most spectacular services are hauled by a steam locomotive more than a century old, pulling a set of small carriages along the narrow track. The pace is unhurried and the route runs through fields, meadows and the edges of lakes — it is slow sightseeing rather than a quick way of getting anywhere. For children, the sight of a working steam engine is often a bigger event than the destination itself.
The railway ties several important sites of the region together. It takes visitors to the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum in Wenecja, to the ruins of the Gothic castle in the same village and, above all, to the archaeological reserve in Biskupin with its reconstruction of a settlement from thousands of years ago. The starting and finishing point is the Museum of the Pałuki Land in Żnin, of which the railway remains a branch.
Services are seasonal, so the timetable should be checked before setting out — it is best to plan a whole day and combine the ride with a visit to Biskupin. Additional attractions are arranged for groups, including staged train robberies and a bonfire in the setting of the Wenecja ruins.
