Cable car over Silesian Park

Elka is a cable car running above Silesian Park (Park Śląski) in Chorzów, Upper Silesia. The route is about 2.2 km long and links the area of the Silesian Stadium with the amusement park in the centre of the grounds; the ride takes roughly a quarter of an hour. Opened in the second half of the 1960s, it was then the longest installation of its kind in Europe and remains a unique means of transport in Poland.

What you see from above

The ride offers a view of the park from a perspective unavailable from its paths: extensive tree stands, the Rosarium, the distinctive „Kapelusz” exhibition hall and the fountains along General Jerzy Ziętek Promenade. On clear days the buildings of Chorzów and Katowice close the horizon, so a single trip puts the geography of the whole complex in order.

Practical notes

There is a choice of four-person chairs and eight-person gondolas; the latter are easier to use for older visitors and people with limited mobility, and dogs are allowed on board. The line operates all year, but in winter usually only at weekends. The lower station lies next to the Silesian Stadium, within reach of the car parks serving the park complex.
