Zalew Nowohucki lies in the old part of Nowa Huta in Cracow, today within the Bieńczyce district. Al. Solidarności leads to it from the south and ul. Bulwarowa from the west. The artificial lake is surrounded by a park; the whole recreational complex covers 17 hectares, of which more than 7 are water.
The reservoir was created in 1957 to a design by Adam Ścigalski as a leisure area for the residents of the new district. It still serves that purpose: the park hosts fairs, picnics, sports competitions and cultural events, and among the greenery stands a brine graduation tower, open from April to October.
The lake is a refuge for water birds — mute swans, mallards, coots and terns nest here, mostly on a small island the locals call Małpi Gaj. After the shoreline was revitalised, a beach with a wooden pier, a playground, an outdoor gym and a marked running track around the water were added.
