Jasne Błonia im. Jana Pawła II is a broad lawn in the centre of Szczecin, stretching between the city hall building and Piotra Skargi street. It can also be entered from Moniuszki and Ogińskiego streets. The open expanse of grass framed by trees forms one of the city's best-known views.
The grounds were laid out in the 1920s on the initiative of the Quistorp family, who designed the layout and planted London plane trees along both sides. These avenues are regarded as the largest concentration of such trees in Poland and are protected. The present name commemorates John Paul II's visit and the mass celebrated here.
Today the meadows are the main recreation ground for the people of Szczecin, who run, walk, cycle and practise Nordic walking here. The terrain is flat and the paths are paved, so pushchairs get around easily. Dogs are welcome and entry is free at any hour.
