A historic park by the lake

The park in Świerklaniec lies in the Tarnowskie Góry district, about thirty kilometres north of Katowice, right beside Lake Świerklaniec. It grew up around the residence of the Donnersmarck family and remains one of the largest park complexes in Upper Silesia.

The story of the place

The palace raised here in the late nineteenth century was nicknamed the Little Versailles for its scale and French character. The building did not survive the Second World War and the years that followed; only foundations and fragments of the old layout remain. The park is being gradually restored and its avenues are again clearly readable.

What to see on a walk

Among the old trees stand the Cavalier Palace, an amphitheatre, fountains, sculptures by Emmanuel Frémiet, a historic church and the former gatehouse. The central section is a promenade with benches, while walking and cycling routes follow the lake shore. There are two playgrounds for children and a fitness trail for older visitors. The ground is level and largely accessible for pushchairs.
