Niemodlin
The Dendrological Park in Lipno near Niemodlin in the Opole region was founded in 1782, which makes it the oldest arboretum in the country. The grounds form part of the Lipno nature and landscape complex and are looked after by the Tułowice Forest District. The layout is informal, with paths winding between old-growth trees and over small bridges across a stream.
The park holds a rich collection of trees and shrubs of foreign origin. Among them grow Douglas fir, eastern hemlock, white fir and Caucasian fir, Oregon grape, Japanese quince and azaleas. Particular attention goes to one of the oldest tulip trees in Poland, a katsura tree whose leaves smell of candy floss, and the Japanese angelica tree, rare in this climate.
The park is at its most impressive in spring, when the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom, and in autumn, when the leaves change colour. A viewing tower gives a panorama of the whole layout. Admission is free.
