A green island in the middle of Opole

Wyspa Bolko lies within the city limits of Opole, between the Oder, the Ulga Canal and the remains of the Wiński Canal. It has served as a municipal park for over a hundred years and is the main recreational area for the people of Opole. Its flat, wide alleys suit walking, running and cycling, and the short distance to the centre makes it easy to combine a visit with sightseeing.

Nature

The tree stand is made up of old oaks, willows, maples and poplars, while the oxbows and canals shelter birds, from owls and falcons to the honey buzzard. Squirrels are easy to spot in the canopy and roe deer appear in quieter corners. Part of the island has kept its natural character, with wet riparian forest.

Nearby

The island is home to Opole zoo, one of the oldest in Poland. The excursion boat Opolanin sails along the river, and on the other bank the Piast Tower offers a panorama of the city and of the whole island.
